Breast Cancer Research

I've been asked to participate in a Young Women's Study about how Breast Cancer affects women under the age of 40. I've read all of the pertinent information about the study and for the most part, I just have to give blood samples each year, fill out questionnaire's once every 6 months for 3 years and then annually for 7 making a total of 10 years.

The packet I received is legit, I understand the study, it's sponsors and reasons...which I think are good - to study the emotional well-being, fertility concerns, sexual functioning, physical health and treatment decisions. Due to the lack of knowledge about most of these areas for young women, I could help be part of research that helps younger women, down the road who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

The packets says to talk about it with friends, co-workers, family, etc. and gather their thoughts and see if questions arise, pros, cons, etc.

10 years is a long time, but if Dr's can help young women cope with the diagnosis of breast cancer in the future, I want to help.

So...what are your thoughts??

Tanya - I think you should definitely participate - the face of cancer has changed so much in the past 10 years, you will be such a big help to so many. The good news is - there are more survivors than ever (and glad to hear that you are one of them!) and this research is desperately needed. You will help so many! Go for it!

Wow, good for you--and for the women you'll help through the years. Just remember all the questions you had, the conversations we had about poor and/or lacking resources, and how "thrilled" we were with the support group. Go get 'em, Tayna, make a difference for the Tanyas and Pennys and others that are about to step into this nasty arena.

Ten years is a long commitment to a study (and that can be a challenge), but I think there are more pros here than cons. Information you provide can help many others down the line... if you want my 2cents, I say to go ahead and participate in the research. Build up some good karma! :)
